Why it follows the wash

Stain will not sit properly on a dirty or grayed board; it soaks into the dead surface layer, sits patchy and lifts early. Clean first, let the wood dry, then finish. Doing it in that order is most of what separates a stain job that lasts from one that does not.

It puts color back and blocks the UV that grayed the boards in the first place, and it slows the water getting in and out of the grain — which is the movement that opens splits and lifts fibers. Questions about deck staining

How long between the wash and the stain?

The wood has to dry through, not just feel dry. That is typically a couple of days of decent weather, and it is why staining is normally a second visit rather than the same afternoon.

How long will the finish last?

It depends on the product, the exposure and how much sun the deck takes. A full-sun deck works harder than a shaded one. Horizontal surfaces always go before vertical rails do.

Can you change the color?

Going darker is straightforward. Going lighter, or off a solid color, is a bigger job because the existing finish has to come off first. Worth raising at the estimate so the quote reflects the real work.
